Safety shoes are worn for 8 hours or more per working day. So it goes without saying that the shoe has to fit properly. We have already reported in another blog post where to pay attention to when choosing the right safety shoe >> LEARN MORE <<. Of course, this includes the right size, the shoe must not press or chafe at the front of the toes or at the back of the heel. In addition, the fit of the shoe is important, as the foot should have enough space in the shoe at all times. Constant pressure on the foot can lead to physical discomfort.

What width for safety shoes

But not only the length of the safety shoe should be considered when choosing. The width is also an important comfort factor. After a few hours on the feet, the feet become thicker and still need enough space in the shoe. Therefore, attention must also be paid to the sufficient width of the footwear.

In many companies, the safety shoes are made available to employees in the required protection class. But as different as the employees are, so are the feet in shape and size. Some shoe manufacturers have found a solution so that all employees can wear a comfortable shoe and still all wear uniform company clothing.

The solution is a multi-width system

The solution for the individual fit is called the "multi-width system". The safety shoes, which are offered in a multi-width system, are available in up to four different widths, namely from 10 to 14. The shoes all look identical, but the fit or width of the shoes is different. This means that every employee from size 35 to 50 can choose the width in which he needs the shoe. The German brand manufacturer ATLAS® Schuhfabrik GmbH & Co.KG has created a practical table for choosing the right shoe.

First, the foot is measured. After that, it is easy to see from this overview what size and width are required.

This system caters much more individually to the fit of the respective employee. Employees who have relatively wide feet often choose a shoe that is too large. The larger sizes have a wider fit, but are far too long for the employee. This shoe that is too long brings dangers with it, as the risk of tripping and falling increases. In other cases, where the shoe is too wide, the shoe does not provide sufficient support.
