April 28 – The International Day for Safety and Health at Work

On April 28 is celebrated worldwide as the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. This day of action was 1984 by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The goal is to raise awareness of safe working conditions and reduce the number of workplace accidents and occupational diseases worldwide.

Because as self-evident as safety may seem: In many industries, risk is still part of everyday work. Machines, tools, dust, chemicals, or heavy physical labor carry dangers. This is exactly where modern occupational safety comes in – with clear rules, professional personal protective equipment (PPE), and a safety culture that protects people.

“A strong workplace safety culture not only saves lives – it is also a key factor for sustainable business success.” – International Labour Organization (ILO)

The history of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work was established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to draw global attention to the importance of safe working conditions.

Since its introduction in 1984, the awareness day has developed into an important platform for discussing topics such as Accident prevention, health protection, and modern safety standards to discuss in companies.

Governments, companies, professional associations, and organizations use this day to inform about improvements in occupational safety and to develop new strategies for safe workplaces.

Why occupational safety is more important today than ever before

The world of work is constantly changing. New technologies, complex production processes, and increasing demands mean that also risks in the workplace must be constantly reassessed.

Especially in industries such as:
  • Construction
  • Industry
  • Logistics
  • craftsmanship
  • Energy supply

belong physical strain, machine work, and hazardous substances become part of everyday life. Without appropriate protective measures, a brief moment of carelessness can have serious consequences. Therefore, clear safety standards and suitable PPE are indispensable today.

Personal protective equipment as a central pillar of occupational safety

An important component of modern safety concepts is the Personal protective equipment (PPE). It protects employees wherever technical or organizational measures alone are not sufficient.

These include, among others:
  • Safety shoes
  • Cut protection gloves
  • Respiratory protection
  • Hearing protectors
  • Safety helmets
  • Safety glasses
  • functional workwear

The right PPE significantly reduces the risk of injury while enabling focused, efficient work.

Safety culture starts in the company

Occupational safety only really works when it is part of the Corporate culture . Safety should not be perceived as an annoying regulation, but as a matter of course.

Companies that take occupational safety seriously benefit in multiple ways:
  • fewer workplace accidents
  • shorter downtimes
  • higher employee motivation
  • long-term productivity

Safety is therefore not only a legal mandate, but also an investment in sustainable company success.

Prevention instead of reaction

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work reminds us every year that prevention is the most important component of occupational safety is. Regular training, risk assessments, modern protective equipment, and clear safety processes help to identify risks early and avoid accidents. Because occupational safety means one thing above all: Recognize hazards before something happens.

Occupational safety is a responsibility – every day

April 28 is an important international day of action. But workplace safety doesn't end after 24 hours of attention. Safe working is a task for every day of the year – for companies, managers, and employees alike. Investing in safety protects people, strengthens companies, and ensures that work does not become a danger. The World Day for Safety and Health at Work reminds us of the importance of this claim.
