What really matters when it comes to the right head protection
Protecting the head is essential in many areas of work – be it on the construction site, in industry or in the trades. But not all safety helmets are the same. Anyone who thinks that every helmet automatically offers safety is mistaken. After all, standards, materials, areas of application and comfort play a decisive role. In this article, we show what you should look out for when buying and using a safety helmet – for maximum safety, wearing comfort and standard-compliant occupational safety.
- Why safety helmets are so important
The head is one of the most sensitive parts of the body – injuries often have serious consequences. A safety helmet can save lives if it is properly selected, worn and cared for. This is why personal protective equipment (PPE) in the area of head protection is a central element of the company's safety strategy.
- Standards that guarantee safety
The most important standard for safety helmets is EN 397, which defines requirements for shock absorption, penetration resistance and flame resistance. Additional markings apply to special requirements – such as electrical insulation (440 V AC), exposure to cold (-20 °C) or side impact protection (LD). Depending on the place of use, other standards may also be relevant, such as EN 50365 for electrically insulating helmets at low voltage.
- Different areas of application – different requirements
A safety helmet for construction is very different from a helmet for working at height. While the classic construction helmet in accordance with EN 397 is sufficient in building construction, additional safety features are important when working on scaffolding or roofs – such as a chin strap and side impact protection in accordance with EN 12492. If you work in hazardous areas, you should pay attention to helmets with antistatic properties.
- Wearing comfort and individualisation
Only a helmet that fits well is worn. Therefore, adjustable interiors, ventilation systems and low weight are important criteria. Many models can also be expanded with accessories such as hearing protection, visor, face protection or neck protection – ideal for changing working conditions.
- Service life and replacement intervals
An often underestimated point: Helmets have a limited lifespan – usually between 3 and 5 years, depending on the model and conditions of use. UV radiation, heat, cold and mechanical stress affect the material. The date of manufacture on the inside of the helmet provides orientation. After an impact or in case of visible damage, the helmet should be replaced immediately.
