There is a particular risk of injury to hands at work. For activities where a potential hazard is to be expected, the employers' liability insurance association prescribes, for example, the use of protective gloves.

When should protective gloves be used?

Many people know it: Wearing protective gloves at work is annoying. Often the feeling arises that the gloves restrict the movements and cannot be worked with the necessary precision. It is true that there are jobs where it is increasingly counterproductive to wear protective gloves, as they endanger one's own hand protection or other people through the transmission of germs.

Protective gloves as personal protective measures should be used in any case if it is not possible to replace or avoid the hazardous substance and if technical or organisational protective measures have not been able to eliminate the identified hazard or have not been able to do so sufficiently. The necessary measures for hand protection result from the risk assessment.

Protective gloves for self-protection - What should be paid attention to?

Wearing protective gloves in the appropriate work situations means that self-protection has been accepted. But not all protective gloves are the same. The top priority is that the protective glove is chosen according to the activity performed. In order to increase comfort and acceptance when wearing, attention should also be paid to some points, which the protection professionals have listed here briefly and concisely:

  • Use your own, suitable protective gloves (the protective gloves must not be too wide and too loose on the hand, but also not too tight)
  • Wear protective gloves only as often and for as long as necessary
  • Wear protective gloves only on clean, dry skin
  • Do not apply skin protection product immediately before putting on protective gloves
  • Change gloves if they are damp inside, possibly use cotton undergloves (also change in time)
  • Do not use defective protective gloves

"Wearing comfort plays an essential role in the acceptance of personal protective equipment. It should not be satisfied with the first thing that comes along, but should be tailored to one's own requirements and needs" – S. Niedhart

The safety professionals raise awareness of the need to wear protective gloves

The excuses to avoid wearing personal protective equipment are complex. It is certainly more pleasant and also more comfortable to do without protective gloves. Unfortunately, in the long term, or even in the short term, this behavior can cause irreparable damage to health after an accident and limit the quality of life. Wearing protective gloves regularly is a small step in everyday life, but a big one for health.
