Every year, New Year's Eve comes. Whether you want to "firecracker" yourself or just watch, we as security professionals have a few interesting tips around the zero hour. So it will be a safe and perfect start to the new year for everyone.

Alcohol on New Year's Eve

Alcohol and safety are clearly mutually exclusive, especially if you have to work over New Year's Day. Even on this special day, occupational health and safety means doing without a glass of sparkling wine. If you are not working, nothing stands in the way of moderate alcohol consumption. A good meal is the perfect basis for a nice evening, without a follow-up hangover. Simply enjoy a good carbohydrate-rich diet together with others, such as fried potato, pasta or rice dishes.

Driving on New Year's Eve

Of course, you would like to sleep in your own bed after the party. The journey home can become a small obstacle course. In addition to rocket and firecracker remnants, many streets are littered with bottles and shards. Only drive yourself if you are not overtired and have full control and responsiveness. It is important in this context that alcohol is absorbed quickly by the body, but can only be broken down extremely slowly in comparison.

A person weighing around 80 kilograms needs about two and a half hours to break down around 20 grams of alcohol.

As a rule of thumb, you can remember that for half a beer (0.5 liters) drunk at half past eleven, you should wait at least until half past two before getting behind the wheel.

The car on New Year's Eve

Every car that is outside on New Year's Eve is exposed to the firecrackers. If you want to protect your vehicles, it is best to go to the car wash beforehand. Freshly washed vehicles are not as susceptible and the falling rocket and firecracker residues slide off the paint more easily. For all those who have left their vehicles in a "vulnerable" area, the following applies to the insurance: After washing and before the firecrackers, take a few photos and document any damage the next morning and report it to the insurance company immediately.

  • Insurance: Fire and explosion damage = partial casco
  • Vandalism (e.g. by drunks) = fully comprehensive insurance
  • Bump (e.g. falling rockets) = fully comprehensive insurance

Fire hazards on New Year's Eve

No matter where a fire starts, there is always a cause for the fire. Those who take precautions have no leniency and save themselves a lot of trouble. Therefore, every year it is important to secure all flammable materials that are stored outside (garden furniture, packaging material, open containers, etc.). Close all windows and doors before New Year's Eve and also make sure that everything that could ignite has been brought in.

Fireworks & firecrackers on New Year's Eve

In many places, the ignition of firecrackers and rockets is already prohibited. If you still want to indulge in the noisy expulsion of the old year, a few very simple tips apply. Only use certified fireworks. Rockets and firecrackers only belong in the hands of adults and should be ignited at a sufficient safety distance from flammable objects. Also important: Never carry firecrackers and rockets in your jacket pocket or on your body. To protect the eyes, we recommend safety glasses and good hearing protection for hearing.
