The acceptance of a work glove depends to a large extent on the wearing comfort. This also includes the ease of putting on the glove. In the case of unlined gloves, this is achieved by the process of chlorination (or chlorination or halogenation).
What does it mean when a glove is "chlorinated"?
What exactly does this "chlorination" mean? Chlorination is the process of rinsing the glove in a mixture of water and dissolved chlorine. Then the glove is washed, if necessary even several times, to remove any residue. This process results in the surface of the material (e.g. natural latex and nitrile) being smooth and free of residues. This makes it much easier to put on the glove. In addition, the glove is "cleaner" (i.e. without powder, no lint) and can therefore also be used in special applications, such as in the food industry.
The production of chlorinated gloves
Due to the manufacturing process, chlorination is very often used in the production of disposable gloves made of natural rubber or nitrile. In the production of disposable gloves, ceramic glove molds are used. These are dipped in the latex or nitrile solution and then dried. So that the gloves can be easily detached from the molds, they are usually powdered with cornstarch. Gloves that are not washed in a chlorine bath after production are thus "powdered". These unchlorinated gloves are usually a little cheaper and have the clear advantage that they are easy to put on even with wet hands due to the powder. The disadvantage of the powder, however, is that it transports the latex proteins contained in the latex gloves well and can cause allergic reactions in the wearer.
Health-neutral and allergies reduced
To reduce the allergy-triggering properties, most gloves are chlorinated. This method not only reduces the number of latex proteins in the glove, but also removes other residues (e.g. Accelerators) are eliminated. Chlorination also causes pH neutrality, which ensures excellent skin compatibility.
The benefits of chlorination speak for themselves. Chlorinated gloves are easy to wear, are softer and smoother than non-chlorinated gloves, and generally offer greater comfort and a lower allergen content.
