The importance of cut-resistant gloves when working with sharp objects

Working with sharp-edged objects

There are many industries in which sharp-edged or pointed objects are handled. During this work, it can quickly happen that you injure your hand or fingers in a brief moment of carelessness. Cuts to the hand can be mild. However, it can also lead to serious injuries with deep cuts, or even severed fingers.

When working where there is a risk of cuts, so-called cut protection gloves must therefore be worn.

Protection against cuts

In addition to abrasion resistance, tear resistance and puncture force, mechanical protective gloves are also tested for their cut resistance. These protective gloves are certified according to category 2 and are marked with the hammer pictogram of EN 388:2016. The cut protection class (performance level) achieved is marked with the respective letter, from A to F. Here, A is the lowest protection class, and protective gloves marked with the letter F offer the highest cut protection.

Testing according to the new cut protection standard

The EN 388 standard was revised in 2016. Since then, there has been a newer, better test method for testing cut resistance (TDM cut test method according to ISO 13997) . The test is carried out as follows: a knife with a straight blade is passed over the glove (test specimen) once. The pressure varies from 2 to 30 Newtons. In this test, the minimum force in Newtons is determined up to the average of the glove fabric. This result thus results in the letter for the cut protection class.

CUT PROTECTION CLASS FORCE (IN NEWTONS)
A up to 2 or more
B up to 5 or more
C up to 10 or more
D up to 15 or more
E up to 22 or more
F up to 30 or more

Filigree work with cut-resistant gloves

Modern protective gloves are characterized by innovative materials for the carrier material and the coating. Thus, the days are over when cut protection gloves were thick, stiff and uncomfortable. In areas where a great deal of sensitivity is required for precise activities, such as fine assembly, cut protection gloves made of high-tech fibres are now being used. The focus is on ergonomics, sensitivity and optimal mobility of the fingers. And all this in combination with protection against cuts.

Advantages of the Allprotec® Easywork CUT Preventer 5

The CUT Preventer 5 from Allprotec® can score points for work in the metalworking industry, in the glass industry, in the automotive industry or in the construction industry. Especially when handling small but sharp-edged parts, the excellent properties of this glove come to the fore. The fine knit glove has performance level D (formerly Level 5) and is made of a fiberglass-reinforced fabric with a knitting size of 13 gauge.  The palm has been coated with a microporous nitrile, which offers not only a very good grip but also a super sensitivity. The very good abrasion resistance makes the glove very durable and stable. Nevertheless, this does not restrict the mobility of the fingers at all. The very good fit and the soft but tight-fitting cuff are also convincing. This prevents the glove from slipping. Our satisfied customers report that it is a glove to feel good.
