Winter will bring white splendour in the various regions of Germany again this year. As beautiful as the snow is when you sit on the sofa indoors with a hot chocolate, it also involves a lot of work.

Tips for shoveling snow

When you shovel snow, you should pay attention to the following things so that flicking does not become a torture.

  1. It is important that you protect yourself well against the cold. A warm jacket, winter boots, hat and gloves are mandatory.
  2. Sweep the sidewalk clean as soon as possible after snowfall. Otherwise, the snow is quickly trodden down and is much more annoying to clear.
  3. When clearing snow, keep your back at a 10-degree angle and bend your knees slightly. This is easy on the back. The shovel should be held by your body and then only move small amounts of snow. After 5-7 minutes, you should give yourself a break of 2-3 minutes.
  4. If the snow is already very compact, it is better to spread sand, if necessary in combination with road salt. Sand makes the smooth surface rough again.
  5. When sprinkling salt, you should wear gloves or use a shovel. Be sure to wash your hands after spreading salt, as road salt contains de-icing agents that are toxic to humans and nature. Therefore, only use road salt in small quantities, a handful of salt per square meter is enough!
  6. Store the road salt in a moisture-proof container. This will prevent the salt from starting to clump. The leftover salt can thus still be used next winter.

Occupational safety winter gloves made of various materials (including waterproof variants) can also be used well for shoveling snow. A further development of the materials enables the manufacturer Portwest to produce gloves with innovative nano technology, which are completely water and oil repellent. The double intermediate layer in the Thermo Pro Ultra Glove also protects the hands from heat and cold when shoveling snow, and the material is also breathable and thus ensures good wearing comfort.
